There are many types of flowers. Most people are familiar with the common types of flowers, like roses and lilies or carnations. There are some very exotic species. They are classified using different genus and species much like animals are classified, and they are used in all types of applications and continue to be shared and adored for their beauty. Some are used just for their beauty but others have much more purpose than just a pretty place to look.

Some are harvested for their scent; they are processed into lotions, candles and other products to make the best use of their scent. Some flowers have a much more powerful scent than others, Roses are a good example of a versatile species that has an amazing scent. Many perfumes are derived from them and is either processed using a flower or is manufactured to smell like one.

Some have a double life. The flowers or parts of the plants may have medicinal purposes. There are thought to have anti viral properties, and are thought to enhance the immune system. Some of these types of are very common and are often grown in home gardens. Chinese medicine relies heavily on natural cures and flowers are often used in elixirs and teas to calm and heal. Western culture is relatively new to using flowers in medicine but the trend has picked up in the last few years.

There are flowers that are used as symbols by many different cultures. There are those that are used to express love and sorrow. They have been used as symbols since the beginning of time. Roses are usually shared between lovers as a symbol of endearing love. Certain species are associated with purity. There are those that are believed by certain cultures to symbolize good luck.

There are flowers that are used in salads and to decorate other dishes. The petals of some are eatable and are added to dishes to add color and some flavor.

Some are poisonous not only to humans but to animals as well. The petals, leaves and stems can cause immediate discomfort to those that mistakenly ingest any part. Some are poisonous not to human and animals but to insects, these are harvested and used to make natural insect repellent and is used as a lice remedy.

There are many types of flowers and many of them function beyond what most people believe about flowers.
